The Brief

THE BRIEF

A small breakdown of the requirement of the exam board, to further exemplify what's the focal point of the opening sequence is, and not being strayed apart and lose focus.
  • Create the titles and opening of a new fiction film (at maximum two minutes)
    • Two minutes duration of new opening, containing original titles
    • Genre: Fiction, Suspense to building the mysterious premise and set the scene, set the enigma and questions for audience. The main focus is to get the audiences' heart pumping and leave them wondering for more
    • Components: Establishing shot, introduce settings, building premise and challenges faced by society/characters, introduce characters
      • Convey or subvert a trope in traditional media. I'd like my film to carry an old aesthetic with new breath and criticism of newer ideas and customs.
  • Titles should follow institutional conventions of commercial cinema
    • Original idents, labeling the producer and distributor of the film, hence designing a brand on your own, start with choosing the right color scheme and fonts
    • Establish a consistent and fleshed out aesthetic of the film, and firstly conveyed by the titles first and foremost. A stylized font could be freshly design and hand drawn, although requires basic skill.
  • All images and text must be original, and produced by you
    • No free stock footage on every shot, even establishing or setting the scene shot
    • All environmental images should be shot by our own
    • Text: Premise and title content should be original, or a feedback and reevaluation of existing works. No plagiarism.
  • Sound should be predominantly original (dialogue and atmospheric sound)
    • A good enough microphone to record atmospheric sound, limit the use of stock audio logs.

Suspense

Suspense is the main theme of this year, and thus the starting point of a brainstorming process, as shown below.

Suspense, as I've come to decided it, is not the fear of immediate fright or direct smash with a critical damage onto the watchers. Suspense, is the slowburn of the fright, of what's coming next, of waiting and expecting the worst or best to grace them, of elongated fraction of seconds of that hit, for the characters to look within themselves, react, and be frightened.

  1. Lovely work Dan- you have fully considered the brief and what you will be expected to do. You have also come up with some interesting ideas in your mind map, well done. Now it's time to pick out some of your favourite ideas and expand on them in writing.
